Book review: More than this

Author Blurb

More than thisAuthor: Patrick NessPublished: September 2013

A boy drowns. But then he wakes. He is naked, thirsty, starving. But alive. How is that possible? He remembers dying, his bones breaking. So how is he is here? And where is this place? What's going on? And why is it that whenever he closes his eyes, he falls prey to vivid, agonizing memories that seem more real than the world around him? Seth begins a search for answers, hoping that he might not be alone, that this might not be the hell he fears it to be, that there might be more than just this...

What impact has technology had on our lives? What if the world we thought was real, actually isn't? Would you trade the real world for a better one? How far are we prepared to let technology go? Are there dangers that we can't perceive from the continuing development of technology?
These are just some of the questions that arise while you read this slightly Sci-Fi, Dystopian, Young Adult adventure: More than this by Patrick Ness.

This unique blend of different genres and issues allows for a depth of individual interpretation that is not often found and should be tightly held on to when it is. It will blow open your opinion of the world in which we live, our use and reliance on technology and how far we are actually willing to go.

***

As you can probably tell I absolutely adored this book. It is as deep and thought provoking as it is gripping and entertaining. The character development is clever, profound, consistent, interesting and you really begin to empathise strongly with the characters - especially Seth.

This book, although maybe not a common re-read, will always have a home on my bookshelf and should, without a doubt come with the following warning; Do not read this book if you have somewhere important to be - it will keep you hooked until, and for a long time after you read the final page.
